Planning for progress
The units in the scheme of work can be sequenced in a variety of ways to ensure progression in pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding through the key stage. Teaching should provide opportunities for them to move:

  • from understanding scientific knowledge in a few areas, to understanding in a wide range of areas, including links between areas;
  • from describing and explaining simple phenomena using their own observations and ideas, to explaining more complex phenomena using scientific concepts, ideas or models; etc.

Royal Observatory Greenwich

A large resource of  free fact files from the Observatory and The National Maritime Museum. eg Our solar system contains planets, comets and asteroids all of which travel around our star, the Sun. There are nine main planets, one main planetoid and there are currently thought to be 165 moons. etc.

The Natural History Museum

Jodrell Bank Observatory

Jodrell Bank Observatory is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Manchester. The Observatory is home to the Lovell Radio Telescope and the MERLIN/VLBI National Facility which is operated by the University on behalf of PPARC.

NASA

NASA - Aerospace, space technology, the human exploration and development of space are all here. Links to other interesting sites including the Hubble Space Telescope and all those incredible pictures of the cosmos.

British Nuclear Fuels

Here you’ll find the answer to questions such as, what is radioactivity? And how does a nuclear power station work? How do dispose of nuclear waste? Plus they have a wealth of learning resources that schools can order. There is material to help with the National Curriculum at both Primary and Secondary levels. BBC schools 4-11 Science

Lots of useful resources plus the chance to search the BBC's Primary Schools TV and Radio output for related subjects with detailed programme description and schedule times.

Incredible resources if you're into using whiteboards.  Try the  3D virtual Earth globe for a start. This beautiful whole-class resource gives you a huge photographic globe of the Earth. Lots of information, quizzes and articles about animals.

The Environment Agency

Find out the latest information from the Environment Agency. There is a database of press releases on a number of different environmental issues and you can search for local news.

Science Web

ScienceWeb offers ready-made worksheets and interactives to support early years and primary teaching. They are easy to use, fun and related directly to the QCA schemes of work.

Science, Engineering and Technology For Women

Website of the SET for women unit, which aims to raise the profile of careers in science, engineering and technology to girls and women.

How Stuff Works

A wide-ranging collection of articles giving scientific explanations and details of the technology. Pupils can find out about topics ranging from car engines to sunglasses; from winemaking to diets.

 

Homework High -Channel 4
