BBC - online
languages -French, German, Spanish
The BBC’s online language
courses in French, German, Spanish and Italian, each of which
has a 24-lesson course attached are excellent. The delivery may
be faintly formal, but the substance is unexpectedly funky.
Slide shows of typical scenes, such as shopping or going on a
date — with attendant chitchat — are coolly effective, too, with
an option to show a transcription in English or the foreign
language. Sound clips include both male and female voices, with
colloquial intonations rather than grammar-book correctness.
There is scope here to achieve a basic grounding in several
languages, with an emphasis on absorbing culture to sweeten the
pill.
Language Guide
What a great site!
Choose any language from French to Hebrew and the same quality
can be found. For example, if you already know a bit of
French and want to brush up without trawling through a long
course of basic lessons, this is the site for you. Browsing
through the vocabulary sections — on insects or computers, say —
brings up a collection of about 20 colour drawings for each, and
you simply move your mouse over the picture to see the French
word and hear it pronounced. This is simple, and much better
than waiting 10 seconds for each word, as elsewhere. In the
lectures section, you can hear French being read aloud, again
deploying the mouse for help with difficult words, while an
excellent section on pronunciation covers the parts other sites
don’t reach. As an addition to any French course, this site
would come in handy — and it makes a printed vocab book
redundant.
Smart Phrase
Thousands of foreign phrases
arranged by subject for seven major languages in a fully
searchable online database. Helpful expressions such as
“It’s a bit like ...” and “What does that mean?” sit alongside
“Do you have your insurance certificate? ”. There are chat-up
lines, too, created by the random phrase generator, with
memorably leaden examples in the German section. Judging from
the French phrases, the vocab is snappy and up-to-date rather
than fussily correct.
Learn
Japanese
With a bare minimum of sound
files to help with pronunciation, this is a good site that
should give the serious student a solid grounding in Japanese.
